This is home, the greatest city in the world. The New Rome, heir to thousands of years of history and culture. Ruled by a line of emperors tracing their succession back to Caesar himself. Byzantium has at its core a beating heart of Christianity. The emperor is the head of the church and defender of the faithful.
You are not an emperor. You are a young merchant who has come into a little money and with that money you can become a wealthy merchant. If you play your cards right. You start with 500 gold (500g).

You decide on undertaking a trade mission to Mali, a land of fabulous riches. It is said that the streets of Timbuktu are paved with gold. Gold enough for you to make your fortune.
Time to prepare for your journey...
[[Preparing for the Journey]]
With your starting gold, you can choose to start with one of the following:
Guards to protect your trade caravan. (-100g)
A guide to keep you from becoming lost. (-50g)
Alternatively, you can hire no additional help and save the money. (-0g)

It's time to choose what goods to carry on your journey.
Common goods can be sold anywhere, and are always in demand. These are goods like cloth, tools, leather, pins, pots, simple foods, basic accessories.
Luxury goods command high prices, but are not always in demand, especially if a local economy is doing poorly. Byzantine luxuries include glass, tile, honey, wine, gold jewelry, and furs.
Choosing to buy and carry common goods will cost 200g.

There are two ways to reach Africa from Constantinople.
The first is overland. This route travels east, and then south along the Mediterranean coast. You would stop in Damascus & Jerusalem along the way, before reaching Cairo. This is a very slow option.
The other route is to take ship directly from Constatinople to Cairo. This route is far quicker, though it does reduce trading opportunities and may be riskier. It also costs 10g.
One final note before starting your journey. You must keep track of your wallet as the game progresses. If your wallet ever drops to 0 or below, you have died and your journey is over.

Traveling overland through Syria is a long journey, but it affords you the opportunity to see all the hustle and bustle in the region. Many pilgrims share the roads with merchant caravans. The pilgrims, mostly Christian, travel to the Holy Land to visit sacred sites like Jerusalem & Bethlehem. The Muslim rulers of the region permit these pilgrims to travel, as they spend money as they travel the region.
Speaking with them, many are not bothered by having Muslim rulers, even though they themselves are Christian. They say that Muslim laws are fair and just, for the most part. They do have to pay a special tax for not being Muslim, but they appreciate the safety and justice their new Muslim rulers provide. Some are not so accepting, saying that the Christian West should join together to drive the Muslims out of the Holy Lands and restore Christian control of the region.

Discussions around the campfire today center on the dangers of the Sahara. The encounter with the dying man has made everyone more aware of the dangers.
In addition to the heat, the groud itself is treacherous. The shifting sands of the desert are not solid footing and falls are a common way to injure oneself. The sand gets EVERYWHERE, and is a constant irritation. Cloths are wrapped around faces to prevent one from breathing in too much sand. With nothing to stop winds, they pick up sand and whip it around. Sandstorms are greatly feared, but even lighter winds carry sand with enough force to rub skin raw. Clothing, even in this hellish heat, needs to cover all of the body save for hands and eyes.

Deserts are strange. By day they are scorching hot, but at night they become freezing cold. This is due to the lack of water vapor in the air - humidity. Water takes a lot of energy to heat, so in places with no humidity there is nothing to help keep the temperature more constant.

Contrary to popular thought, a camel's hump does not store water. It stores fat that acts as a food reserve when a camel has nothing to eat. Camels will drink a lot when able to, and can go for long periods without drinking. They are very well adapted to desert life.
Oases are always an opportunity to rest and speak with other caravans. The other travelers speak of bandits in the area - fearsome bedoiun raiders.

[[The End]]Welcome!
This is a choose-your-own-adventure game designed to introduce learners to the Medieval trading world of the Mediterranean, Middle East, & North Africa.
Throughout the game you will be presented with choices that may or may not impact your success in the game. Choose wisely!
The goal of the game, other than learning, is to have the highest score possible at the end of the game. Your score - the wallet - is a representation of your success as a merchant. Should it ever drop to 0, you lose and the game is over.
